Marquise

is a sprightly costume drama based on the fetching dancer cum thespian who dazzled Molière, Racine and the Sun King himself before making a suitably theatrical exit in 1668 at age 35.

Born into poverty, Marquise, a promiscuous woman, uses her exquisite beauty and seductive dancing to earn her living. When the distinguished Molière and his theatre troupe come into town, Marquise mesmerises the men and especially lead actor, René du Parque (Gros René), who falls had over heels for her and asks for her hand in marriage. She agrees to his proposal, but only on the condition that she joins the theatre group and becomes an actress. Unfortunately, her talent does not measure up to her beauty.

Thence follows passion, success, betrayal and demise.

Starring Sophie Marceau as Marquise, Bernard Girardeau as Molière, Patrick Timsit as Gros René, Lambert Wilson as Racine and Thierry Lhermitte as Louis XIV, this unpretentious drama comedy manages to make viewers feel sophisticated and involved without requiring an advanced degree in French history. An attractive cast, bawdy subtext, lavish production design and peppy score are among the pleasures in Vera Belmont's energetically helmed picture.
