Max Brackett (Dustin Hoffman) was one of the network's best reporters, until one day he lost the plot during a live report, and was sent to tiny Madeline, California USA. Sam Bailey (John Travolta) grew up in Madeline and lived an uneventful life, until he lost his job. As Max interviews Sam's boss, Miss Banks (Blythe Danner), Sam shows up to beg for his job. Then suddenly, he pulls a gun. Within minutes, Max is broadcasting the story live. Within hours, the entire nation is watching it with bated breath...
