Theatrical report
The lovely bones is a bit like the inevitable sequel to Heavenly creatures, Peter Jackson's earlier film about teenage girls, unspeakable crime and fantastical special effects. It also borrows heavily from What dreams may come. Maybe it's the cornfield but there's also more than a hint of M Night Shyamalan in its twisted weirdness.
I was pleased to see Mark (Don't call me Marky) Wahlberg in a purely dramatic role as he doesn't get them very often. Susan Sarandon made a delicious old lush. Stanley Tucci is creepy. A bit too creepy. The reason that serial paedophiles and serial killers get away with their crimes for long enough to become serial is that they are so ordinary-looking that they disappear into the background. Maybe next time Mr Wahlberg can be the paedo - now that would be interesting.
It's good, too, to see Peter making a film without hobbits but it would be good to see what he can do without special effects (if he can). Restrictions can be a challenge and can cause you to think more creatively than you do when you have access to all the crayons in the box.
This is a good movie.
