Packed with more than 750 state-of-the-art special effects, including exploding planets, talking robots and spaceship dogfights, one of the best loved television series of the 60s becomes New Line Cinema's most ambitious and eagerly anticipated presentation to date.

Lost in space takes audiences into the not too distant future as Professor John Robinson (William Hurt), his wife Maureen (Mimi Rogers), their daughters Judy (Heather Graham) and Penny (Lacey Chabert), and son Will (Jack Johnson) are selected to be the first family to colonise outer space.

Piloted by Major Don West (Matt Leblanc), the Jupiter 2 takes off to Alpha Prime, the only other habitable planet in the galaxy. En route, their spacecraft is sabotaged by arch villain Doctor Zachary Smith (Gary Oldman). When the Jupiter 2 strays dangerously off course, the Robinson family must band together and use their unique skills to complete their mission or face certain death while lost in space.

Room for a sequel.

Lost in space is a super-duper roller coaster ride that beats the space-pants off anything at the Easter Show (also, it's cheaper, it's easier to get to, the crowds are smaller and you can eat just as much junk food without being sick). The special effects (welcome to the digital age) are great: imaginative, effective, surprising and realistic enough that you can sit back and enjoy the ride.

The script is a bit dodgy in parts, but I was pleasantly surprised by the touches of irony (I had always assumed that American studios cut irony out of scripts as a matter of course). The cast is an interesting ensemble but they are a tad mismatched; they perform their parts well, the younger the better but the parts aren't what I would put together. Once again I am forced to admit that I could've made this film better.

But it's Lost in space, not Shakespeare, and the drama is there only to support the entertainment factor and the inevitable sequel, Are we there yet? Excellent holiday viewing, fun for the whole family, great value for money.
