Movie propaganda

Disney's amazing undersea adventure resurfaces in an all new story bursting with the same captivating musical style, unforgettably colourful characters and brilliant animation that made the original film an academy award winning favourite.

After rejoicing over the birth of their daughter Melody (Tara Charendoff), Ariel (Jodi Benson) and Eric (Rob Paulsen) must face a new threat from Ursula's sinister sibling Morgana (Pat Carroll) - a threat that forces them to hide Melody's true mermaid heritage. Melody, a young princess curious about her roots ultimately ventures into the sea against her parents' wishes. There she meets new friends, and in her dream to be a mermaid, becomes a pawn in Morgana's plot to avenge Ursula, overthrow King Triton (Kenneth Mars) and gain control of the seven seas. Ariel must reunite with her childhood friends, Sebastian (Samuel E Wright), Flounder (cam Clarke) and Scuttle (buddy Hackett), to rescue her daughter and restore harmony to her family.

Theatrical report

More Little mermaid.

What's better: nothing. What's worse: nothing. What's different: not a lot. The story is still about a girl who isn't allowed to be what she knows she is deep down on the inside (not that Disney is more gay-friendly now than every other decade of its existence). Sebastian is older but still the funkiest crustacean under the sea. Morgana is camper than her sister. Eric is a dashing hero. Ariel is a typical mother who does everything to her children that her parents did to her.

The songs aren't as grand - but what could ever be better than Under the sea? It's no surprise that Return to the sea was released straight to video (even though that's one of Disney's marketing strategies) because it's not as good as the original. If it were the first flick released there wouldn't be a second. Having said that, it'll still keep the nippers out of the way come the next rainy weekend!
