Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, the story focuses on the rebellious 17-year-old Veronica “Ronnie” Miller ( Miley Cyrus) who is sent to spend the summer with her estranged father (Greg Kinnear) in the sleepy coastal beach town of Wilmington, North Carolina. Ronnie's father, a former concert pianist and teacher, is living a quiet life, immersed in creating a work of art that will become the centrepiece of a local church. Within this milieu, Ronnie falls in love for the first time and reconciles with her father.
