Movie propaganda

Twelve-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could've been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's (Taraji P Henson) latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Meiying (Wenwen Han) - and the feeling is mutual - but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre's feelings make an enemy of the class bully, and kung-fu prodigy, Cheng (Zhenwei Wang). With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of The karate. As Han teaches Dre that karate is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realises that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

Theatrical report

Two-and-a-half hours?! Very few movies are worth sitting still for that long and The karate kid is not one of them. The fighting bits are fun but the training drags on and the family bits and romance bits are mostly boring. I mean, they're 12-year-old kids for Heaven's sake; just how important is puppy love supposed to be? (Answer: It isn't important.) There's some fun kung-fu with hard-core violence that the original didn't have and Jackie Chan is no Mr Miyagi (Pat Morita), he's himself, which is a good thing, but Jaden Smith dumps it on Ralph Macchio as the kid (don't blame Ralph too much: he didn't get to choose his name - thanks mum, thanks dad - and the original was made in the 80s, back when reality was being overwhelmed by its shoulder pads).

Yes, it's the school holidays and you can take the kids to see The karate kid while you have a latte and do a bit of retail therapy (I suppose the extra-long running time will come in handy) but you'll be a bit disappointed at the way it's all changed. A bit like life, really.

The action, martial arts movie The karate kid is directed by Harald Zwart and stars Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan, Taraji P Henson.
