Johnny "Skidmarks" (Peter Gallagher) is a cold and uncaring forensic photographer who is unaffected by the gruesome scenes he deals with on a daily basis. He also leads a double life.
To earn a little extra cash, he works with a team of blackmailers who set men up with hookers and Johnny bursts into the cheap motel room to take incriminating photographs. No questions asked, no harm done... until one by one, the entire team start showing up dead. Not just murdered, but systematically butchered in increasingly twisted and clever ways.
Around the same time, Johnny becomes entranced with a mysterious woman (Academy award-winner Frances McDormand), the first to take his interest since the death of his wife. He begins to let down his barriers... only to find himself suspecting she might be involved in the gruesome murders.
Also starring John Lithgow.
