Woo hoo! Boy seeks robot for fun times, genuine replies only.

The iron giant is a really fun animated film that goes the distance for kids and groan-ups alike. The story is interesting, the main characters are realistic and the animation is cool; the robot just goes off. His voice is just like steel sliding over steel. He walks like a giant, squats like a giant, and falls over like a giant. Hogarth is a typical boy who is allowed to have bad moods and be spiteful and mean as well as sugar and spice.

The most unusual character is Dean, the beatnik sculptor who befriends Hogarth and (eventually) the robot: his non-mainstream lifestyle is definitely not the usual fodder for animated features. He's a hip cat who adds an air of reality to the otherwise fearsomely Leave it to Beaver surroundings. He is, of course, redeemed by forming a paternal relationship with Hogarth (and later a romantic relationship with Annie), but his hedonistic ways are too well ingrained to be over-looked. He also provides the funniest scene when he gives Hogarth a cup of espresso...

Anyhoo, the heroic factor in The iron giant is played for all it's worth. The ability of any individual to rise above their own self-interest and take up responsibility for others is always a good start for a film, no matter at whom it's aimed. Hogarth's empathy, Annie's maternal instincts and Dean's innate kindness teach the robot how to perceive the greater good and how to act on its behalf. His self-sacrifice, the ultimate act of love, made me cry because it was such a beautiful thing. I'm not used to films from the USA having any great merit so this one really surprised me. It was a good thing.

So, pretty much everyone will enjoy The iron giant because it's a really good film to watch. Thanks to all applicants, position filled.
