Movie propaganda
Freshly graduated from college with a promising future ahead, 22-year-old Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch) instead walked out of his privileged life and into the wild in search of adventure. What happened to him on the way transformed this young wanderer into an enduring symbol for countless people. Was Christopher McCandless a heroic adventurer or a naïve idealist, a rebellious 1990s Thoreau or another lost American son, a fearless risk-taker or a tragic figure who wrestled with the precarious balance between man and nature?
Each strand of his journey is woven into Sean Penn's screen adaptation of Jon Krakauer's acclaimed best-seller, Into the Wild, which is as much about the insatiable yearning for family, home and connection as it is the search for truth and happiness.
McCandless' quest took him from the wheat fields of South Dakota to a renegade trip down the Colorado River to the non-conformists' refuge of Slab City, California, and beyond. Along the way, he encountered a series of colourful characters at the very edges of American society who shaped his understanding of life and whose lives he, in turn, changed. In the end, he tested himself by heading alone into the wilds of the great North, where everything he had seen and learned and felt came to a head in ways he never could have expected.

Theatrical report
Into the wild is a biography and not a commentary on The War in Iraq™, even though you might think that there are parallels with the story of an overconfident adolescent from a sheltered background thinking that he can go anywhere and take control of everything but ends up getting into more trouble than he can handle.
Emile Hirsch is great as the cocky brat who thinks that life in the wild is no more challenging than life in the suburbs; reading books by Jack Kerouac at university no more prepare you for life on the road than watching RPA prepares you to perform brain surgery. But, why let that stop you? Meanwhile, I'm hoping that Emile's performance is just that. If he really is this young, dumb and full of cum then his life insurance premiums are going to go through the roof. And he's a hottie (the scruffier the better) and that never hurts.
Even though Into the wild romanticises the penniless, peripatetic lifestyle you do get a sense of the major (eg no showers) and minor unpleasantness (eg starvation). Oh, and the violence. And the unpredictability. And the illegalities. Sounds like fun.
The Christopher McCandless biography movie Into the wild is directed by Sean Penn and stars Emile Hirsch, Marcia Gay Harden, William Hurt.
