What was Mark Whitacre thinking? A rising star at agricultural-industry giant Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), Whitacre (Matt Damon) suddenly turns whistle-blower. Even as he exposes his company's multi-national price-fixing conspiracy to the FBI, Whitacre envisions himself being hailed as a hero of the common man and handed a promotion. But before all that can happen, the FBI needs evidence, so Whitacre eagerly agrees to wear a wire and carry a hidden tape recorder in his briefcase, imagining himself as a kind of de facto secret agent. Unfortunately for the FBI, their lead witness hasn't been quite so forthcoming about helping himself to the corporate coffers. Whitacre's ever-changing account frustrates the agents and threatens the case against ADM as it becomes almost impossible to decipher what is real and what is the product of Whitacre's rambling imagination. Based on the true story of the highest-ranking corporate whistle-blower in US history.

Theatrical report

The informant! is really long. All that stuff you see in the 30-second trailer makes up 90 minutes of the movie so you get really bored with it. So bored that several people walked out of the preview, but only several; most people stayed for the free movie experience, after all, this is a reasonably entertaining movie: there's suspense because the protagonist is doing spy/thriller stuff and might get caught, there's humour because he's a total loser and seems to be doing everything wrong that he possibly can, and there's intrigue because it's all a bit Erin Brockovich meets Catch me if you can. The pay-off is good but it comes 88 minutes too late.

The crime, thriller, true movie The informant! is directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars Matt Damon, Melanie Lynskey, Scott Bakula.
