On hearing the news, his father Hank (Tommy Lee Jones), a former military MP, and his wife Joan (Susan Sarandon) launch a search for their son. Theatrical report

In the Valley of Elah is a cop drama with soldiers. The main theme is that bad things happen in war and that they really fuck up the soldiers who have to fight that war. There's a side issue that the army doesn't give a shit about the soldiers and gives them no support when they leave the combat zone (a little counselling goes a long way) but no bureaucracy can be expected to care about unquantifiable things like emotions. The really clever part is the whole father/son issue, in a film where the father and the sons never appear together. It's well-done.

The drama, war movie In the Valley of Elah is directed by Paul Haggis and stars Tommy Lee Jones, Charlize Theron, Susan Sarandon.
