Movie propaganda

Venice, 1763. Writer Lorenzo da Ponte (Lorenzo Balducci) is leading a very cavalier life. Originally a priest, his numerous affairs result in him being sent into exile in Vienna.

Supported by his friend and mentor Giacomo Casanova (Tobias Moretti), da Ponte is introduced in Vienna to the King's favourite composer, Salieri (Ennio Fantastichini), and a newcomer named Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Lino Guanciale).

Seeing an opportunity to undermine his rival's ascension, Salieri tricks Mozart into hiring this unknown libertine as his librettist. But da Ponte's own nature and sentimental wanderings in Vienna only inspire the composer, and lead to one of Mozart's most bold and powerful compositions: Don Giovanni.

Theatrical report

I, Don Giovanni is beautifully shot but boringly presented. Everything happens with a tedium that even Mozart's music can't relieve. You could cut out half of this film and still not loose anything. Oddly, the German dialogue is dubbed over the original Italian script. I don't get what that's about. If you're going to make a movie about Italy and Germany - in Europe - you might as well get the languages right. I think that everyone who will watch a movie about Casanova and Mozart can read a handful of subtitles without giving up in disgust.

You have to be a die-hard Mozart fan to watch this film.

The Italy, music, Spain movie I, Don Giovanni is directed by Carlos Saura and stars Lorenzo Balducci, Lino Guanciale, Tobias Moretti.
