In 1972, Holly Maddux (Naomi Watts), a young university graduate, meats and falls in love with the charismatic activist Ira Einhorn (Kevin Anderson). Soon, she learns that his brilliant public persona masks a dark and troubled psyche. Their stormy relationship concerns Holly's family, especially her father (Tom Skerritt), who must face his worst fears when she disappears.

Based on a true story, The hunt for the unicorn killer chronicles the case of Philadelphia activist Einhorn, who was convicted in absentia of the 1977 murder of his ex-girlfriend Holly Maddux. More than 20 years after her death, Ira continues to elude capture.
