Mordechai Jefferson Carver, aka "The Hebrew Hammer" (Adam Goldberg), is an Orthodox stud, who goes on a mission to save Hanukkah. When Santa Claus's (Richard Riehle) evil son Damien (Andy Dick) is pushed over the edge by his father's liberal policies, he does away with the Christian patriarch. Subsequently stepping into his father's role, Damien launches a campaign to eradicate the Jewish Holiday. The Hammer joins forces with Esther Bloomenbergansteinthal (Judy Greer), the gorgeous and dangerous daughter of the world's top Jewish leader, and his friend Mario Mohammed Ali Paula Abdul Rahiem (Van Peebles), head of the Kwanzaa Liberation Front, to topple the evil Santa and save Hanukkah for future generations.

Theatrical report

The Hebrew Hammer is a celebration of cliché and all that's kitsch in the world of the 20th Century urban Jew.

If you are Jewish, if you speak Hebrew, if you have friends who are Jews, you will giggle, chuckle and roar with laughter watching Adam Goldberg's antics on the big screen. If you watched a lot of Seinfeld you'll find it funny, too. If you are none of the above, you'll find yourself on the outside of an in-joke.

Fly that to Wichita.

Bucket of nails.

Getting back to the point, and there is one, The Hebrew Hammer is a small comedy for a small community that's managed to survive on its sense of humour for more than 5000 years (that's no small achievement given the number of times they've been on the wrong end of a pogrom). If you can think like a Jew, you'll like this film. Otherwise, give it a miss.
