Theatrical report
Griff the Invisible is a very Australian movie about superheroes, in general and in particular. The fascination with a man (occasionally a woman, if she has big boobs) who can swoop out of the night and save us from danger all while wearing a Lycra body suit (or leather, if that works for you) is hugely homoerotic but somehow acceptable. I guess he's the ultimate footy player, and there's a lot of biff. Bring back the biff! Griff!
Of course, the superhero's alter ego is a dweeb. Ryan Kwanten is total dweebness. Everyone picks on him. He has bad hair. He has poor social skills. Ceiling Cat watches him masturbate. The only thing Griff has going for him is... ok, well, nothing. Talk about an underdog. Sure, he tries hard... ok, no, he doesn't. He's a loser. Capital D-O-R-K. You really want to slap him, grab him by the lapels and shout, "Get a life!"
And then, boy meets girl. It's like watching a single-hulled oil tanker out of control and heading for a maritime nature reserve full of fairy penguins.
But, because this is an Aussie film, there's more. There's a twist. Shall I tell you? Nah, I'll save it for when you watch the movie. You won't see it coming even though Leon Ford has provided several signposts. That's the sign of a good twist: it makes you remember all the clues that you should've noticed. Oh yes, everything goes wrong. That's how you know this is a comedy, and a good one at that.
The Australia, superhero movie Griff the Invisible is directed by Leon Ford and stars Ryan Kwanten, Maeve Dermody, Kelly Paterniti.
