A true automobile aficionado, Randall "Memphis" Raines (Nicolas Cage) has a burning passion for cars. Fuel-injected, high performance, V8, V12, turbo-charged, loaded or stripped to the bare essentials, he knows and loves every nut and bolt, every gleaming piece of chrome. Memphis is a car thief of legendary proportion. No fancy lock or alarm or lowjack can stop him; your car will be there and gone in 60 seconds. For years Memphis eluded the law while boosting every make and model imaginable.
When the heat became too intense, he left everything and everyone he loved to find a different life. But when his kid brother, Kip (Giovanni Ribisi), tries to follow in his footsteps only to become dangerously embroiled in a high stakes caper, Memphis is sucked back into his old life tearing up the streets for one last death defying heist.

Gone in 60 seconds is a spoof, but it's done well enough that you'll think they're taking themselves seriously.
The plot is basic Hollywood (crim goes straight only to find himself needing his old skills in order to save someone's life), the casting is basic Hollywood (famous people and good-looking non-famous people) and the directing is basic Hollywood (high speed car chases, destruction of beautiful cars and tricks of the criminal trade). In fact, this entire movie would be a cliché if it weren't for the fact that it takes the piss out of itself on every occasion it can. There's a sly "We're all wankers and we know it and you know it and we know you know it and you know we know you know it so we can forget about it and have a good time" feeling that undercuts any moment when Gone in 60 seconds might start taking itself seriously. That's good because otherwise it would be a really wanky flick.
Nicholas is Nicholas (slightly edgy hero with a dark side), Angelina is a sex goddess (with attitude), Delroy does a great Lawrence Fishburne impression and the dog out-does them all (ever seen a constipated canine?)
If you liked Con air you'll find a lot to like in Gone in 60 seconds. If you prefer your action with a bit of brain you'll also like Gone in 60 seconds. Everybody cut loose with the boys and "Woo hoo" your head off. Woo hoo!
