In turn-of-the-century Paris, Gaston Lachaille (Louis Jourdan) is a bon vivant much like his uncle, Honoré (Maurice Chevalier). But Gaston is becoming bored with the high life... especially the women. He only truly enjoys the time that he spends with one of his uncle's old friends, Madame Alvarez (Hermione Gingold), and her grand-daughter, the precocious and carefree Gigi (Leslie Caron). Gigi is being groomed to follow in her grandmother's footsteps as a famous courtesan. It suddenly occurs to Gaston that he could become her first protector, but the situation makes him uneasy until he discovers that he's in love with Gigi and wants to marry her.

Theatrical report
Ah, the good old days, when men were men and women were wilful creatures in need of a man to provide for them. Good, solid, traditional French family values. Not.
If you're the kind of person who thinks My fair lady is a classic piece of filmmaking with delightful characters, witty repartee and wonderful songs then Gigi is your exact cup of tea. There are frocks for days, filthily rich people lazing the days away in a round of parties, extravagances, trysts, travels, gossip and songs. Beautiful people leading beautiful lives.
There are also some classic songs, such as Gigi, of course, and Thank Heaven for little girls.
If you're still reading, then I recommend that you get this DVD. If you've already stopped reading and you've gone somewhere else to look for something more interesting, don't. It's that simple.
PS: Gay means happy and Honoré isn't singing about pædophilia.
