Movie propaganda
The happy existence of Joe (Colin Firth) and his young family is turned upside down in an instant when a horrific car accident takes the life of his wife. In search of a fresh start, Joe decides to leave behind his home in the United States - which holds too many memories of a once-happy family - and relocate himself and his two young daughters to the exotic town of Genova, Italy. But contrary to the new beginnings he had hoped to find, it appears that the thick fog of grief hanging over their household continues to afflict them all.
As Joe rekindles an old friendship with a university colleague (Catherine Keener), and his 16-year-old daughter Kelly (Willa Holland) explores the sexy and dangerous underbelly of this mysterious new world, it is the younger Mary (Perla Haney-Jardine), who is most clearly struggling to move past her acute emotional pain, and continues to have visions of her mother wandering the streets of the scenic northern Italian city.

Theatrical report
Well, it sucks to be in love. It sucks even more to make a mistake that kills someone. Grief is bad but grief and guilt is worse. After that, it's a matter of getting through each day without dying (that's the same as before but now you WANT to die). Life goes on. Whether you want it to or not.
