Go behind the lies.

John Travolta stars in The General's daughter, a crime thriller in which ambition, destructive passion and long-suppressed secrets lead to a murder on a USA Army post.

Warrant officer Paul Brenner is a CID investigator with the power to arrest any military person - whatever the rank - anywhere in the world. He's been called in to investigate the murder of Captain Elisabeth Campbell, the daughter of a famous General (James Cromwell). What he discovers beneath the well-ordered surface of military life is a sordid secret that makes murder suspects of some of the Army's finest.

Also starring Madeleine Stowe, Timothy Hutton, Leslie Stefanson, Clarence Williams III and James Woods. Directed by Simon West.

Theatrical report

Don't ask, don't tell.

This film is not, as you might assume, an action movie with lots of running around and shooting. It is a police drama set on a military base. Remember that and you won't be disappointed when hardly anyone gets their head blown off.

That said, The General's daughter uses women in the military (see also GI Jane) as an excuse to create a drama which could have been about a man being raped as much as a woman. I am being a bit cynical about this but that's just the way things are. Women in the military is a lot more controversial than men in the military. After all, men have been allowed to fight on the front line for several decades now.

As far as acting goes, there's not a lot to say. Mostly because there isn't a heck of a lot of acting to talk about. The story really only needs the actors to look nice and say their lines at the right time. Isn't it funny how Hollywood doesn't have any ugly people in the military? I have seen American soldiers and John Travolta they are not.

*Shudders*

Anyhoo, The General's daughter is not a must-see film but it will fill the gap. There's a lot of mystery and telling lies and head games and even some nudity (female - this is a guy movie), all mixed up together. The viewpoint is unashamedly Hollywood so you can sit back and let the film do all your thinking for you. As you should - remember: the media is your friend.
