Movie propaganda
Based on the remarkable life of iconic French singer, poet, writer and actor Serge Gainsbourg, the film is a surreal and evocative record of Gainsbourg (Eric Elmosnino) growing up in 1940s Nazi-occupied Paris, when he was called Lucien Ginsberg, through to his transformation into the hard-living showman, enfant terrible and successful song-writer of the 50s and 60s, and a famous womaniser who bedded some of the era's most beautiful women including Brigitte Bardot (Laetitia Casta) and Jane Birkin (Lucy Gordon), to his notoriety in the 70s and 80s. A visually and narratively innovative project that features special effects from the makers of Pan's Labyrinth (El laberinto del fauno), in Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque) we glimpse the fantasy world that drove his inspiration, the women he loved and lost and most of all, the music that made him a legend.

Theatrical report
Is it just me or are French artists predisposed to early success, big noses, hot sex drug abuse and lonely seclusion? See also Sagan, Sister Smile (Soeur Sourire). (Yes, yes, Belgium is part of France. Everyone knows this.)
I'd never heard of Serge Gainsbourg (let alone Lucien Ginsburg) even though I did know that song he wrote, the sexiest song in history: Je t'aime. If you haven't heard it, then you're still a virgin. And given the babe he was rooting at the time, it's not surprising. What is it with hot chicks and men with big talents? Is it the creativity, the exotic lifestyle, the money, the drugs, the fame, the grateful sex? It's as much a trip as the 60s were themselves. And what style! Brigitte Bardot walking down the wall, dropping her dog off at the neighbour's apartment then coming in for a shag. Pure style.
The Serge Gainsbourg biography movie Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque) is directed by Joann Sfar and stars Eric Elmosnino, Lucy Gordon, Laetitia Casta.
