Theatrical report
I enjoyed Futurama as a television series and was very disappointed when the TEN Network decided not to carry it any more. I'm not certain if the episodes I've been seeing recently are 'new' or if they're so old that I cannot remember the first season. Either way, I was pleased to see the first movie - Bender's big score - on the rental shelves and after enjoying that one, was very surprised to see this one.
Having said that, my expectations overestimated the content of this second film. I'm not sure if the creators are getting tired, or if they're desperate for further revenue to be generated by the series. Either way, it did not live up to my expectations. The story continuity did, however and I also enjoyed the length. What bothered me about the film was its content (or lack thereof). The idea was sound, but there didn't seem to be as many sub-plots within the film as there usually are, and that's what bothered me. One aspect I have come to expect from Animated Feature Presentations (AFP) is that there is the standard plot which carries throughout the entire film. Then each character or several characters - usually joined in pairs - has/have another sub-plot which is linked to the main plot and realised either very early on, or towards the end. This time Fry had a sub-plot that was immediately noticeable to the main plot as well as Kif who finally kicks it after a stupid judgement call by Zapp; but aside from these two characters I saw no other stories. Sure, Bender had a part in the main plot but I do not agree that it was a sub-plot because without it the main plot would not have concluded the way it had.
Overall, this is worth hiring while it is new, especially if you enjoyed the series, you will enjoy this feature length episode. Don't worry: it's not 3 or 4 episodes linked together, it's one very long one.
The animation, science fiction movie Futurama: the beast with a billion backs is directed by Peter Avanzin and stars Billy West, Katey Sagal, John Di Maggi.
