Movie propaganda
Exit through the gift shop, the first film by renowned graffiti artist Banksy, became the hottest ticket at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival where it made its world debut. Banksy is a graffiti artist with a global reputation whose work can be seen on walls from post-hurricane New Orleans to the separation barrier on the Palestinian West Bank. Fiercely guarding his anonymity to avoid prosecution, Banksy has so far resisted all attempts to be captured on film. Exit through the gift shop tells the incredible true story of how eccentric French shopkeeper Thierry Guetta turned documentary-maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner - with spectacular results. The film contains exclusive footage of Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Invader and many of the world's most infamous graffiti artists at work, on walls and in interview. As Banksy describes it, "It's basically the story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable. And failed."

Theatrical report
I like street art. I don't like graffiti. One is a creative expression, like painting; the other is an aggressive expression, like snapping the branches from the recently-planted saplings outside my house. How small does your penis be to do that?
So, you need some balls to do street art, not the least because the cops are going to arrest you if they catch you. There's also the issue of having to get into dangerous places in order to make your art. And the possibility that thousands of people might see your work and not like it, but it's too late, it's out there (artists are very much afraid of that).
Anyway, Exit through the gift shop is a great title for a film about edgy art, unfortunately, it's a better container than the contents. By the time you get to the end you'll understand why: the French dude is a whacko. A dyed-in-the-wool nut-job. He films EVERYTHING because of a mother issue. He makes no use of the recordings. His final work is shit. When push comes to shove, he's just a weirdo with a camera. Fortunately, there's Banksy, a legend in his own lifetime, he makes every previous artist look like your granny painting landscapes from pictures on the wall calendar. The search for Banksy makes the film interesting, and the fact that Banksy had to re-cut the whole thing makes the film worth watching. Now you get a wry commentary about Thierry Guetta, art pretension, guerrilla art, the politics of single-causes, and Banksy. You've got to be interested in most of these things to enjoy Exit through the gift shop, but if you are, then it's worth it. You're probably edgy. And you will now have guaranteed street cred. Use it wisely.
