Theatrical report
If you're a non-native Francophone and you've never quite understood the concept of "sympa" then watch Every Jack has a Jill (Jusqu'à toi) and you'll get it. If you don't speak French at all, get over it, you'll still like this movie: it's like a sweet, syrupy cup of hot chocolate. With foam. And a marshmallow. Mmm... marshmallow.
Mélanie Laurent and Justin Bartha are perfectly cast as the amiable but loopy protagonists. They both present high-functioning nutters with a sense of irony but never denigration, ie you can laugh with them as well as at them, and of course, when you look at them, you think, "I'd tap that."
Meanwhile, what kind of English title is Every Jack has a Jill? The French means something like "Until I'm with you". I'm thinking that someone in the marketing department thought that was too romantic and went for the nursery rhyme instead. Talk about dumbing down. This is a French film, largely in French. I think that everyone who goes to see it is going to appreciate the Frenchness of the original title.
So, while Every Jack has a Jill (Jusqu'à toi) is not the exotic cuisine of Amélie, it sure is a pain au chocolat. Bon appétit!
The comedy, France, romance movie Every Jack has a Jill (Jusqu'à toi) is directed by Jennifer Devoldère and stars Mélanie Laurent, Justin Bartha, Billy Boyd.
