Dude, where's my car?

Threat advisory: Elevated - Significant risk of entertaining activities

Movie propaganda

Last night, Jesse (Ashton Kutcher) and Chester (Seann William Scott), two party-hearty dudes had an unbelievably sweet time. Too bad, they can't remember a thing, including where they parked their car. All they know is there's a year's supply of pudding in the fridge and their girlfriends are ticked at them for trashing their house and forgetting their anniversary. To make up with the girls, the dudes have to find the anniversary gifts they bought for the occasion. But it won't be easy the goodies are in their car.

So, the dudes embark on a mission: retrace their steps to find out what they did last night (and who they did it to), hoping it will lead them to the missing car. Little do the dudes know, they're in for the ride of their lives.

Theatrical report

Dude, where's my spliff?

Prior to this thrilling movie mystery I was blithely unaware of the predilection of young Australians to occasionally use the word "Dude" where an older generation would always use the word "Mate". It, like, totally blew my mind.

Meanwhile, some guys got together and made a guy movie about some guys who get toasted and lose the plot, such as they had one to begin with. The guys, Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott (who would belabour their child with an extra "n" at the end of their name?), are classic USA post-secondary education reefer-addict bimbo babes. Their predicament is as bogus as anything can be in their lives. If you don't recognise Bill and Ted (one's blond and one's brunet) in the new millennium you've been partying on too much. For your elucidation, Seann is the short, blond, slightly more stupid one and Ashton is the tall, brunet, slightly more together one. Both are cute in the daggy sense of the word.

But that's enough post-modern deconstructionism for one review. Suffice to say that Dude, where's my car? is a popcorn kind of film for the popcorn kind of brain (you know, if you use it, it jumps around making a loud popping noise and is never the same again). There are some good gags, some homophobic comments, some repressive patriarchal tendencies and a whole lot of empty air, mostly between the characters' ears. If you can't handle the thought of watching a movie like this, see Finding Forrester instead.
