Drowning Mona

1 murder. 460 prime suspects. Not so much of a "who done it" as a "who didn't."
The little town of Verplanck, New York USA, is not known to the outside world for anything special. It is not, however, a community without its eccentricities. And when long time resident Mona Dearly (Bette Milder) drove her Yugo into the river to her death, no one really seemed to care. All in all, Mona's jaunt into the river could have been described as a pretty fortuitous accident for everyone's lives she touched, or in Mona's case, bludgeoned. Except for the fact that it wasn't an accident. And although Chief of Police Wyatt Rash (Danny Devito) didn't particularly care for the woman either, he's bound by duty to find her killer. The biggest problem in Chief Rash's investigation is when he asks himself "Who would like to see Mona Dearly dead?" the same answer keeps coming back... who wouldn't...?
Also starring Neve Campbell as Ellen, Jamie Lee Curtis as Rona, Casey Affleck as Bobby Calzone, William Fichtner as Phil Dearly, Marcus Thomas as Jeff Dearly, Yul Vazquez as Frenchy and Will Farrell as the funeral home guy. Written by Peter Steinfeld, directed by Nick Gomez.

Theatrical report
Did the guy who directed Cookie's fortune direct this film? [No, that was Robert Altman - Director of Intelligence.] It has a familiar tone except that this time, everyone is guilty. I was hoping to see Rhea Pearlman as Neve's mother but that was not to be. Ah, well, you can't have everything. [But you can try! - Director of Intelligence.]While watching Drowning Mona I found it very difficult to figure out whether I was watching a contemporaneous scene or a flashback but by the end credits everything had fallen into place.
When you're looking on the shelves of your local video shop and you see this film in the comedy section, think about how funny American beauty was, then you'll understand.
