Dinner with friends

Movie propaganda

Four friends. Two marriages. One divorce.

Two couples. Four friends. Their lives closely intertwined by familiar bonds of love, marriage, parenthood and companionship. The husbands were best friends since university. The wives met each other at work. Gabe (Dennis Quaid) and Karen (Andie Macdowell) introduced Tom (Greg Kinnear) and Beth (Toni Collette) to each other. It's been a happy foursome for 12 years, sharing extravagant gourmet dinners, vacations on Martha's vineyard and child rearing. They all expected "to grow old and fat together, the four of us". Then, one night at dinner, somewhere between the pumpkin risotto and the lemon almond polenta cake, Beth dissolves in to heaving sobs, blurting out the news that Tom is leaving her for another woman. This unexpected revelation catapults both couples into a re-evaluation of their lives, their friendships, their marriages and their dreams for the future.

Theatrical report

Friends: The child-rearing years.

Dinner with friends is a romantic drama that's good for single chicks but dangerous for couples. It delves into the ultimate chick flick theme: talking about relationships. That is entertaining unless you're in a relationship that's a little bit Rocky because this film will peel the scabs off old wounds.

Useful if you feel like a good cry.
