Movie propaganda
What happens when a world-renowned scientist, crushed by the loss of his eldest daughter, conceives a book which will prove the non-existence of God? This is the story of Charles Darwin (Paul Bettany) and his master-work The origin of species. It tells of a global revolution played out the confines of a small English village; a passionate marriage torn apart by the most dangerous idea in history; and a theory saved from extinction by the logic of a child.

Theatrical report
After seeing Paul Bettany play Doctor Stephen Maturin in Master and Commander: the far side of the world, there was little chance that anyone else would be chosen to portray the ultimate natural philosopher, Charles Darwin. Not that the two characters are the same, but the roles certainly are, if you get my drift.
The odd thing about this film is that it's a bit weird for a biography. You are put into his head as he processes his grief for his dead favourite child, daughter Annie (played by Martha West). Charles' subconscious creates her ghost to push him into a state of sanity but he resists it, and to the world, appears insane. That's a nice touch of irony but it doesn't quite fit with the "rationalist" lifestyle that such educated gentlemen lived. It's all about empiricism and logic and the search for truth, not a mumbo jumbo "soft" science like psychiatry. Or is it psychology? I always get the two mixed up. (Psychiatry: the branch of medicine dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders; psychology: the science of mental life. - Director of Intelligence.) Still, it gets the story told, which is that Charles Darwin had "issues" about publishing his revolutionary theory but eventually talked himself into it. Good for him. Where would we be without evolution?
