Movie propaganda
Boldly unconventional and cheerful, that's how one could describe Babou (Isabelle Huppert). Never having cared about social conventions, she is suddenly faced with the realisation that her own daughter is ashamed of her and therefore refuses to invite her to her wedding. Hurt in her pride, Babou tries to regain her daughter's respect by starting anew. She accepts the challenge of selling time-sharing-flats at the Belgian seaside during the off-season, in a desperate attempt to prove her real worth and her motherly love to her daughter.

Theatrical report
Copacabana is a small French drama that could play as easily on the small screen as it does on the big. The actors are all big enough but the story itself is small and the way it is presented is odd, as the two main characters spend most of the film apart, so their conflict is absent (even though it's more realistic to present estrangement this way, it doesn't lead to particularly interesting cinema). The protagonist is also small (again, more realistic than your average Hollywood character) but that lowers the film from cinematic drama to the realm of reality TV. Did you see Sylvania Waters? And how much do you want to know about selling time-share apartments in Belgium?
