All she ever wanted was a little credit...
Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) is a sweet and charming New York City girl who has a tiny, little problem that is rapidly turning into a big problem: she's hopelessly addicted to shopping and drowning in a sea of debt. While Rebecca has dreams of working for a top fashion magazine, she can't quite get her foot in the door - that is, until she snags a job as an advice columnist for a new financial magazine published by the same company. Overnight, her column becomes hugely popular, turning her into an overnight celebrity. But when her compulsive shopping and growing debt issues threaten to destroy her love life and derail her career, she struggles to keep it all from spiralling out of control.. and is ultimately forced to re-evaluate what's really important in life.

Theatrical report
You don't have to be a girl to watch Confessions of a shopaholic but you do have to be a girl if you want to enjoy it. Apparently, females are predisposed to shopping because they are gatherers, wandering around the jungle looking for fruit and leaves and things is a survival trait. Women shop because they are expressing their genetic heritage. Women shop without buying anything because they are expressing their genetic heritage. (Men are hunters; spending as little time and energy while catching one wildebeest is a survival trait. Men go to one shop and buy the thing they want because they are expressing their genetic heritage.) Every now and then, the genetic lottery throws up a freak who lives at the extreme end of the human condition: Olympic athletes, bungy jumpers, supermodels, serial killers and now shoppers.
There is no small element of psychosis in this type of behaviour; you know what a credit card is, you know that you have to pay the money back, you know that the bank didn't give you a card just to make you happy yet you abuse it and cause a one-person credit crunch. Well, it serves you right. Sucked in.
The best part of Confessions of a shopaholic is Isla Fisher's full-on performance. She's right out there. This movie would set her up in Hollywood even if Aussie actors weren't better than Yanks. Kristen Scott Thomas is a wonderful French fashion bitch. She absolutely drips ennui.
There's a lot of comedy to this film but there's also a lot of unreasonable romance, but you expect that from the target demographic. This is one for the office chicks.
The comedy, romance movie Confessions of a shopaholic is directed by PJ Hogan and stars Isla Fisher, Krysten Ritter, Hugh Dancy.
