It's all about perception...

François Pignon (Daniel Auteuil) leads an uncomplicated, unremarkable life of quiet monotony; his only problem - he is exceedingly boring. So boring in fact, that his beloved wife has left him and his apathetic 17-year-old son constantly avoids him. His only salvation is his accounting job at a condom factory.

However, even this is threatened when Pignon accidentally discovers he is about to be fired because his employers, too, have grown tired of him.

Pignon is desperate to keep his job, and his neighbour belone (Michel aumont), a retired corporate psychologist, just might have a solution. Together, they devise an outrageous scheme to fix everything - Pignon will come out of a closet he never went into. They'll start a rumour that he is gay, and leave his entire company guessing.

Pignon may be the same man, but suddenly life is a lot more interesting. He is a straight man pretending to live a gay life. Entrenched in a comedy of errors, Pignon discovers that perception really is everything.
