A story about how far we must travel to find the place where we belong.
Homer Wells (Tobey Maguire) has spent his entire life right where he was born: St Cloud's Orphanage. Here with the unconventional but loving tutelage of Doctor Wilbur Larch (Michael Caine), Homer has flourished. His life has been simple, innocent and fulfilling. yet now, as he sets off on his own personal journey, Homer is suddenly introduced to a bigger world full of new experiences - love, friendship, danger, tragedy and betrayal - all of which will profoundly change him and, ultimately, confirm his destiny.

Sunday roast.
The Cider House rules is filmic meat and three veg: hearty, filling and traditional. The story has a rich, meaty flavour that carries you through a good couple of hours. The characters are like roast potatoes, golden crispy on the outside and fluffy soft on the inside. The setting is a thick brown gravy smothering all the other ingredients while allowing individual flavours to come through.
Like any good, square meal, The Cider House rules will satisfy your appetite and comfort your taste buds. It has been carefully roasted in a slow oven and basted in its own juices. It's the comforting taste of homeliness without having to wash the dishes afterwards. Salt and pepper have been added judiciously, subtly enough so as not to overpower but strong enough to tickle your tonsils.
Serves any-sized family with lots of leftovers for cold sandwiches tomorrow.
