On behalf of oppressed bugs everywhere an inventive ant named Flik (Dave Foley) hires warrior bugs to defend his colony from a horde of free-loading grasshoppers, led by Hopper (Kevin Spacey). But when Flik's cavalry turns out to be a ragtag group of flea circus performers, the stage is set for comic confusion, revealing some unlikely heroes!

Do not, I repeat, not confuse this animated film with Antz.

Do not expect to hear Woody Allen revealing his life scandals and giving his "How depressed I am" spiel in the opening scene. If you do, you won't laugh or cheer the Tim Allen of insects in his attempts to save the colony.

A bug's life has that Lassie meets Home improvement appeal where the lonely ant leaves the colony to seek his fortune only to realise that everyone is happy to see him go; then returns home and have everyone lay their hopes on the blundering fool. It's yet another typically American love story. Idiot leaves home, idiot comes back home, idiot saves everything, idiot gets the girl. The end.

The end? Not quite. I hereby require you to watch the end credits. This is such a good film that even if you didn't laugh during the viewing you'll definitely laugh after it. After all, these aren't animated pixels with voice-overs, they're bugs with their own union!
