When a group of Korean archaeologists find a skeleton and identify it, they call Lee Jin-Seok (Bin Won), who is now an old man, to tell him that they have found his brother's body, who died in the Korean War. We travel from the present to 1950, when the Korean War started. Jin-Seok and Jin-tae (Dong-Kun Jang), Jin-Seok's brother, are young men who suddenly find themselves catapulted into a bloody world so different from their quiet, rural lives. As the war progresses, the war begins to poison Jin-Tae's mind. Jin-Seok is lost when he finds that he no longer knows who his brother is.

Theatrical report

Brotherhood of war is a full-on view of life as cannon-fodder. Like Band of brothers, Brotherhood of war shows what it is like to go through hell with the men you love, but focuses only on two men (boys), who are actually brothers by blood. Like Saving Private Ryan, Brotherhood of war is full of grit and dirt and blood and smoke and fire and noise and death but it falls not the the dreaded Hollywood Ending™. This is, after all, a Korean film about the Korean War, not an American film about Americans saving Europe in a European war.

What Brotherhood of war lacks in subtitling it makes up for in shooting, hitting, killing, loving and the discovery of self under fire; it's to infantry as Das boot is to submariners. Have a nice war.
