Theatrical report
The Hughes brothers have been watching their samurai films, especially Zatoichi (Zatôichi). They've also been reading their manga. And perhaps watching The road. And maybe a bit of Mad Max. The twist (which I've spoiled above) is the most interesting part of the film where it should be the icing on the cake. The casting is too obvious (Denzel Washington is the goody and Gary Oldman is the baddy), the sets are overdone, and I have to wonder what these people have been eating for the last 30 years. If you like apocalyptic science fiction westerns, then you might like The Book of Eli but don't count on it.
Could do better.
The action, thriller movie The Book of Eli is directed by Albert Hughes, Allen Hughes and stars Gary Oldman, Denzel Washington, Ray Stevenson.
