When desire gets dangerous.
Danish backpacker Mike Hammershoi (Anders W Berthelsen) is running from a dark secret. One night, while travelling through the Scottish borders, he stops at Black's estate hoping to find some work. There, he encounters blind farm-owner Francis Black (Peter Mullan) and his elderly mother Bella (Phyllida Law), in a shuttered, decaying mansion, cut off from the outside world.
Francis reluctantly offers the traveller a low-paid job in the farmyard. But, put off by the unsettling atmosphere, Mike declines. As he turns to go, a chance encounter with Rachel (Jodhi May), Francis' enigmatic young wife, persuades him to change his mind.
Mike starts work on the farm, dumping the debris of the Blacks' once-successful business into the "pit" - a vortex of quicksand at the edge of the estate. The young woman, emotionally suffocated by her husband, is increasingly drawn to the traveller. They become lovers and, as the sexual tension increases, so too does Francis' rage.
He sacks Mike in fit of anger. But the threat of her lover's departure torments Rachel, and she is forced to decide her own fate. Unaware of his troubled past, she chooses to leave with Mike. However, as the young lovers prepare to make their escape, Francis plans his revenge...
