The anniversary party

Threat advisory: Guarded - General risk of entertaining activities

Movie propaganda

It's not a party until something gets broken.

An emotionally stirring story about the complexity of love and the deterioration of relationships, The anniversary party tells the tale of 24 hours in the life of Joe Therrian (Alan Cumming) and Sally Nash (Jennifer Jason Leigh). The couple, having recently reconciled after a year's separation, is hosting a 6th wedding anniversary party in their honour and have invited a few close friends. The well-meaning event quickly begins to unravel when one intoxicating gift turns friendly banter into an adult version of truth or consequences. As true confessions, unfiltered and unwelcome, turn the friendly gathering into a minefield of raw emotion, Joe and Sally must face their fears, exposed to all their friends, or lose their tender truce forever.

Theatrical report

I have seen this movie before, although back then it was known as Grand Canyon and was about a bunch of middle-aged people in various degrees of differing crises, and how they all came together in the end. The anniversary party follows a similar course (and even borrows Kevin from the original cast) but is about thirty-somethings in various degrees of differing crises, and how they all come together in the end.

It's an upper class "Why don't we check out that movie place, darling?" kind of film.

Now, while many people who aren't that sort of class might still enjoy The anniversary party, I sincerely hope that you don't watch it because it looks like a warm, fuzzy drama because it's not worth it.
