Movie propaganda

The story about the one that got away and the one she never saw coming.

Following the break-up of her seemingly perfect romantic relationship with dashing Ray (Greg Kinnear), Jane Goodale (Ashley Judd) is left with nothing but questions about the opposite sex. Driven by her heartache, she begins researching male behaviour and soon develops a cynical hypothesis aptly named the New Cow theory. Basically, the theory compares the mating habits of men to bulls. A bull pursues a new cow and then, once they have mated, the bull discards the now old cow for a new cow, never to go back to the old cow. When the theory is anonymously published in a magazine, it becomes the talk of the town, resonating the feelings of women everywhere. However convinced, Jane comes across an exception to her hypothesis from the most unexpected source, her handsome "bull" roommate Eddie (Hugh Jackman), causing her to re-evaluate her theory.

Theatrical report

Animal husbandry was supposed to be a wryly comedic insight on the behaviour of the modern male with a bit of romance thrown in for luck. I haven't read the book but I can tell from the original title that there's some intellect buried under there somewhere. Instead, the bovine references become a running gag rather than a leit motif and it all turns into a rather bland romantic comedy called Someone like you. If you were wondering why the title got changed, it's because someone in the Fox bureaucracy decided that the film needed to be a Romantic Comedy with a title that would sell it as a Romantic Comedy. After all, how do you market a wryly insightful comedy? It just doesn't fit into a convenient box.

Ummm... Hugh Jackman has buffed up bigtime. He's very sexy in his boxers and even manages to flash a bit of bum cheek in one scene. Ashley Judd is herself and Greg Kinnear is cute, dopey and completely wasted. This is one of those jobs that actors do for the money. Also, in Hollywood, everyone is afraid that if you don't work continually you won't work again. You know, like people will only employ someone who's already employed.

Whatever.

There are some good bits but the whole cow thing would've been funnier back when cows were mad and not being burned in giant pits for having foot and mouth disease. Does anyone still have friesian car seat covers?
