Theatrical report
It has been a long time since I've written anything for the cinema. Partly that's been due to my laziness and partly due to the lack of interesting films to comment on. Fair enough, in the past I have written some fairly scathing reviews, but lately I've started to feel that I'm wasting my breath. It's one thing to say that something was either good or bad and to harp on about it yet I want to be able to offer constructive criticisms for what I see and to possibly see the creation from the writer's & director's points of view. So that whether I enjoy the film or not I would have at least had a two-pronged argument to present to you the reader.
I'm certain that when 10,000 BC is released there will be a large amount of hype involved. It's not exactly a "mainstream" topic that Hollywood normally writes about usually because there aren't that many (direct) similarities between that period and today. Please don't screw your face up or look at this with your head tilted to the side; let's use Harry Potter as an example. Clearly there is a direct link between "You Know Who" and terrorism. Real-world people say as long as they can't see it, it can't hurt them; yet there are people who experience it every day and say that it's real. Or perhaps let's compare Star Wars and its Galactic Empire with the United States government and how it lords its power over the rest of the world, yet there are still a few people out there "fighting the good fight".
Back to the hype; while this isn't a mainstream topic, it is certainly a very entertaining film. There was only one place that I questioned the writing. Usually there are one or two places where one may ask oneself, "That's a bit silly or overly stretching the imagination isn't it?" Aside from that however I was please with the plot, it was consistent from start to finish and while I'm hoping to see more in a Director's Cut, what was presented to me was quite adequate. I also enjoyed the historical accuracy that was put into this film. My history knowledge is not great enough to question the timing, however I was confident that the timeline was held more closely intact than say, Jurassic Park which included creatures that may not have necessarily been in the Jurassic period. I appreciated how the film answered questions that I asked even as they were explained as a part of the story. I do not want to give away anything about this film, however it may be difficult when I am trying to explain my reasoning. So having said that the only items I will give away are this: What I enjoyed most about this film were its two climaxes.
I don't write so that people may argue against or agree with me; I write to provide my personal opinion. Please take this as you will and all I ask in return is that you understand or consider that my word never has nor will be the final one.
The action, adventure, fantasy movie 10,000 BC is directed by Roland Emmerich and stars Camilla Belle, Steven Strait, Cliff Curtis.
